What does the board do?
The Board works collaboratively to support the College’s vision, ensuring decisions reflect the needs of students, families, and the wider College community. It plays a key advisory role, ensuring resources are used effectively and priorities align with the College’s values and goals.
The Board’s responsibilities are specified under legislation and include:
- approving College fees, charges, and personal items lists
- determining the school uniform
- helping set and monitor the College’s strategic direction (e.g., Business Plan)
- overseeing financial arrangements to support College objectives
- promoting the College in the community and exploring sponsorship opportunities
What the board does not do
The School Education Act 1999 and the School Education Regulations 2000 limit the functions of school boards to ensure their roles complement, but do not overlap with, the responsibilities of principals and the Department of Education. Understanding these limitations is crucial for maintaining effective school governance.
The College Board does not manage the day-to-day running of the school, does not intervene in the educational instruction of students and does not exercise authority over school staff. These responsibilities belong to the College principal, who ensures the College operates in compliance with all relevant laws and policies. However, the principal may consult the College Board to understand different perspectives across the College community.
How often does the board meet?
The College Board meets twice per term during the school year. The final meeting of the year is the Annual Public Meeting, where key updates and achievements are shared with the community.
Joining the College Board
Serving on the College Board is an opportunity to make a real impact on the College’s future. Parents, staff, students, and community members who are passionate about education and willing to contribute their time are encouraged to get involved.
All board members must:
- complete a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check through the Department of Education
- align with and sign the College Board Code of Conduct as required by the Department of Education’s Guidelines, which ensures all members uphold high standards of integrity and professionalism
- comply with the Department of Education’s Code of Conduct which applies to school council and board members, as well as all employees and Department representatives.
Elections for new parent representative board members are held each year in term four with notices sent by Compass.
Other ways to be involved
The Board may periodically identify specific skills, expertise, or attributes that would benefit the College. If you are interested in contributing in other ways, we also maintain a Parent & Carer Talent Database, where you can register your skills and availability for College projects and committees.
